The Dreaded Orange Kitchen

I just saw this kitchen listed in 1203 Churchill Downs Drive, located in Waxhaw, NC 28173. This is a $750,000 and a beautiful one at that but look at this very orange kitchen!!

This is a tough call because when you’re in the market to buy a new home, especially in Waxhaw, you’re going to pay a good amount of money for your home but you will get a beautiful home and of course in a fantastic location. I know it’s location that matters more so than the color of your kitchen but as well all know, the kitchen is the core of the home.

So what would I change in this kitchen? For one, I’d take the sofa out! I must say this is the first time that I’ve seen a sofa in the kitchen and I’ve been in many, many homes here in Waxhaw because this is where I work 🙂

Ok, back to the kitchen. Look at ALL those cabinets!!! Omagosh! It seems like they are squashed together and they are all the same height. No interest in this kitchen design whatsoever. Just installed cabinets like sardines in a can. How about some glass fronts?

A Cream European Maple cabinet to balance out some of the orange would be gorgeous!

And of course I’d also change out the wall color. When you have a kitchen that is this orange the last thing you need to do is add more warmth to the room. Choose a cooler wall color with less yellow undertones. I’d go for drama in this kitchen and use Gotham, a Color Stories color that will change this humdrum kitchen into a kitchen fit for a King – and Queen.

Hmmmmm, actually, now that I’m looking at the kitchen space if the homeowner really wants to keep the sofa there, I’d add this stunning Capel area rug to help divide this really large kitchen. Doing this will add interest and keep it from looking like a basket ball court.

Can you picture this kitchen now? Just a few changes can really transform this kitchen. Should you do it before you place the home on the market? Well, in my opinion, if it’s in your budget to do so I would certainly consider it. A Designer kitchen is always a plus to have in a high end home.

Here’s the link in you want to see the rest of this home … or even to buy it!

  1. Hi Donna,
I see LOTS and LOTS of orangey-wood kitchens here in Nashville! I usually choose a green or blue wall color with the orange. The one you suggested appears to be a gray (with a pinkish undertone?). Do you find that grays work well with orangey cabinets, or grays with certain undertones? Oh, and love that rug!

Hi Kristie – no, the gray would not look good with the orangey cabinets but if you read the blog a bit further you’ll see that I recommend changing the cabinets out to the cream color -then it would look nicer 🙂

Don’t you just love that rug? Capel is just a few miles from my home and I go there often to browse.
