I was reading a blog this morning and in the post was an interview from a published Designer. You’ve read these interviews before, “how did you get started”, “what’s your signature look?” but the question that I love to hear of course is “what is your favorite color or what color trend you think is popular now?” I always love to hear what other Designers think is the up coming color but more importantly, I like to hear WHY.
“Oh I love blue and green!” – you do? Why?
… or “I like bright colors” Why?
When you ask Designers about what they think will be the up and coming next, most wonderful color palette in the world, you just can’t say “Oh Navy is going to be it!” or “Keep and eye out for yellow!” without a statement saying why. To me, this means that you’re just following everyone else’s guesses, color predictions. Either you have a strong statement of why YOU think these color will be showing or your should really not say anything at all.
I’ve been quoted in several publications of Paint & Decorating Retailer and Enlightenment Magazine these very same questions but I provided a reason why I think certain colors will be showing. However, and this brings me back to the title of this post, if you ask 10 Designers you’ll get 10 different answers. So who do you believe?
This my friends will probably always remain a mystery. Even Color Marketing Group is off on MANY of there color predictions. So in conclusion, I love reading the color interviews but really don’t like to hear what the Designers favorite colors are – who cares! When I’m asked what my favorite colors are, I respond with a very small list of colors that I don’t like. How can you be a Color Expert and only love just a few colors? I love them all – except black, brown and navy blue 🙂
This is exactly what fascinates me about color – just like you can get 10 different responses about color trend forecasts, you could also get 10 different recommendations for an interior color scheme. All professional, based on the client’s needs, and all potentially “right” solutions to the design challenge. In my former life as an advertising executive, there may have been more than one solution to a problem, but they were usually not equally effective in solving the problem :).
. . . and a good Designer will have or should have, several solutions just in case the client doesn’t like the first one.
You made me laugh, because its true – who care what the favorite color is? We have so many colors to pick from, who can have just a few? I never met a color I didn’t like, in the right place. A fascinating post, the experts have differing opinions and tastes. This is not a paint by numbers or one color answer.

And who cares what’s in style this year, or going to be in next year? People should always go with their own favorites, and what makes them feel good.
That’s right! Be your own color trend setter.
