Why you should NOT hire an Interior Designer if you just need color

It breaks my heart when I get emails from people or hear my clients say, “I don’t want an Interior Designer to come to my home to choose color for me. They wind up choosing basic color or the wrong color and pressure me to buy drapery and accessories.” What is a client to do?

I wish I had a dime for every time I heard this complaint. This is an email that I received from someone who was just looking for color.  This is part of the email:

We started painting with the colors the other designer recommended and the house looked like a dungeon! I told her I wanted light, bright, color that “pops”. I am tired of coming home to a dark-colored house. I like color. But, she convinced my wife to go with dark colors and then bring color into the house through window treatments, paintings, rugs, accessories, etc. When she was picking the colors, I told my wife that she was doing that so that we would hire her to “design” the rooms…

and it goes on.

What Designer goes with dark colors when the client asks for “light, bright and pop?” People, you can have all the best draperies, paintings, rugs and accessories under the sun but if your wall color is off, you’re done!

I’ve been in homes where color was all the decor that they had. These clients are people who just moved in and don’t have any furniture or decor yet. These are people who can’t afford accessories of fancy drapery and these are people who just want to keep their home simple and pretty. You can build a beautiful home as time goes one BUT, like any home, you’ll need a good foundation. A foundation of color … the RIGHT color.

So, back to the issue of what to do for the clients who just want color. BE CAREFUL WHO YOU HIRE! There are many professional Interior Designers in Charlotte out there who will do what their clients ask for – and that’s it. The second they start to get off track and start selling – show them the door.

This is why I specialize in JUST color. Can I do it all? Yes! Been there done that but today, after 30 years of Interior Design experience, this is what I do. 100% color and love it. There are times when the clients asked me for Interior Design services and I will help them with whatever they want. But, when I go into the home of a client who asks me for color for their home, that is exactly what they get.

All clients have to do is a quick Google search on the person they are thinking about hiring to see what they do. Google me and you’ll see its color, color and color.

So keep in mind, if you need Interior Design services, hire an Interior Designer. Selling your home? Hire a Stager. Just need color for your home? Hire a Color Expert or at least someone who specializes in just color and I would be more than happy to help you with that!

  1. Good to know you have the client’s best interest. I am visiting your blog (from Vancouver, Canada) too bad we are far away (thanks to the online world which brings us closer). I like your blogging style and there is valuable information here. Thank you for sharing what you love. Karina Eva.

Well thank you for the visit Amando and thanks for including your Twitter address. I’m @Color4Charlotte – let’s hook up there as well!

My blogging style, funny, because I know it’s a plethora of grammatical errors but I’m not here to write a novel, just to share expert color advice. As far as the errors, I’m working on that 🙂
