Don’t be Afraid Of Dark Spaces or Dark Wall Color

Do you have a small dark room? Do you also like dark colors? Well use them! Just because you have a small room and love dark colors doesn’t mean you can use that color for your room.

Like I always say,

“Your wall color isn’t going to physically make your room any larger so just use a color that your love.”

Of course if you paint your room white it will appear to look a larger and brighter but it will also look like a hospital. Forget that!

My client in Waxhaw, NC (Millbridge) wanted a darker blue for her office so I gave it to her. What the room small? Yes but she had white office furniture which helped out a lot.

Did she have a lot of light in the room? Not really. She did have two windows but to prevent of screen glare, she kept her blinds closed.

This is a prefect example how accessories can really liven up a room, or office in this case. Look at the colors in this pillow! Perfect addition to the dark blue wall.

  1. You know me, I love deeper, darker colors. What is interesting is that both of my offices (in my former home and my current home) were both a dark blue. The former, Ralph Lauren’s ‘Mediterranean’ and the latter, Behr’s ‘Smokey Blue’. I loved them both. As you stated, white furniture and accessories in bright hues of color really do help not make the room too dark.

  2. Amen, Donna! Everyone is always so focused on making the room feel huge. What’s important is that the room serve its functional purpose(s) and make you feel good whenever you’re in it, of course!
