Don’t Play Duck, Duck, Goose With Your Color

I can’t even begin to tell you how much thought needs to go in to choosing the right color for your home. If you’ve been reading my blog than you have a pretty good idea.

When you have a color in mind, I have to ask, how did you go about choosing that color? Did you just walk up to the paint color wall of shame and just choose one? Did you see it in a magazine and like it? Pinterest picture? Your neighbors house? Whichever way you came about choosing color for your home are you really sure it’s the right color for you?

Here are some tips to help you choose color for your home.

Online. This is such a tease! You see a color on the Benjamin Moore or Sherwin Williams websites, you look up the name, pretty pretty, you go to the store and buy a gallon (and you didn’t sample it out first) start painting and you are shocked! Where’s the color I saw online? Well it’s still there but what you see and what you get will be two very different colors.

Pinterest: There are literally millions of color ideas and inspirations on Pinterest right? Right! Pinterest is a fantastic place to get color inspiration. Sometimes you can find some boards that have gorgeous pins AND mention the name of the color. That’s a good place to start.

Box Stores: You know the ones I’m talking bout – Lowe’s and Home Depot. What’s my beef? Well  I used to work at both these companies way back in the day so I really, really (did I day really) know the ways these store and their Associates work. Trust me when I tell you that MOST of them will not be able to really help you with your color choices. They are there to sell product not provide you with professional color advice. Once in an extremely blue moon (like when I worked there) you’ll find a Pro but they won’t be there for long 🙂

Neighbors: Just don’t. The Jones’ have their colors and you should have yours besides, I’m sure they have different lighting and decor in their home which will make their color choices unique to just them.

Paint Stores: Again, these people are here to pump out the product not to provide you with professional color advice. They will show you their top 10 best colors in the world and you will love them but will they be the right choices for YOUR home? Maybe yes, maybe no.

Once in a while you will find a professional who may be working there part time for some reason which will be a fantastic find. Get their business card and laminate it.

Which brings me to my point. Don’t play duck, duck, goose with your color choices. You will waste your time and your money. Do a Google search for a “A color expert in (insert your city) and see what comes up. There’s a really good chance that I’ll show up in that search and that’s good! I do virtual consults all the time.
