It’s that time of year when we start talking about color and home furnishing trends for the next year. My stomach gets all tipsy turvy because I see the colors that are starting to be called trends and in my opinion, they are not.
“Fly Colors Fly!”
We first have to define what a color trend is. Forget the dictionary let’s just talk amongst ourselves here. To me, a color or home furnishing trend is a colorway that is being introduced. Keyword here is “introduced” as we all know as being seen for the first time.
Now it gets a little tricky because I recently posted my vision of which way home furnishing trends should be going on my other blog called A Color Specialist in Charlotte. In that post I talk about the Peacock Color Palette that I see heading our way. Is is already in homes in Italy? Yes. Paris. Yes. Runways? Yes. Are you starting or have already seen it here in our stores? It’s getting there!
On my other blog I presented this moodboard featuring the beautiful Peacock Mural by Customized Walls and a color palette I designed to capture the look and feel of it.
Now you’re probably wondering why I would choose these colors after just saying we need to introduce NEW colors. I know, I hear you! But this is the deal. People still have turquoise in their home from Pantone’s choice for 2010. People will ALWAYS have blue in their home – that’s a given. However, these are colors I chose for HOME FURNISHINGS not wall color. There is a difference.
Home decor has to coordinate with the wall color everyone is choosing. For those of you went blue crazy, you’ll love to bring in some orange decor (see the orange circle on my moodboard?) This hue can be used in either fabric or wall color. You have to be really careful when using orange in your home. Too dark and it’s Home Depot, too light and it’s peach. Here is a blog post I wrote about the color peach that you may want to read.
If you went with the gray trend, this Jeremy Leather chair from Cr Laine Furniture would be a very beautiful addition to your decor.
Wool Skein would look GORGEOUS Madison Pistachio color also by CR Laine.
If you’re uncomfortable choosing leather in hues other than brown, black and white (ugh, ugh and ugh) you simply must just consider this Cromwell Chair in this breathtaking blue (Arcadia Iris to be exact)
What do you think about these colors for your home furnishings?
I’ll admit, the above colors are much closer to what I am drawn to, en vogue or not. I’ve always loved gray (I even had a gray bedroom back in 2001-2003), but I am so over the white/gray/pastel look everywhere. It isn’t my cup of tea. I love the wispy white look in others’ homes, but not my own. I am excited that some of the colors I crave are on their way! Then again, sometimes it is nice to be different. 😀
