Do you love Sea Salt SW 6204?
Of course you do and so do a trillion other people! Is Sea Salt SW 6204 a great color? Yes, it is! Should you have Sea Salt in your home? Of course, you should but come read a few reasons why perhaps you shouldn’t.

I first want to say that absolutely you should have Sea Salt in your home. After all, it’s a really beautiful color and I’d bet my bottom dollar that you already have it somewhere in your home, perhaps the bathroom? Your bedroom? I’m right, aren’t I?
Sea Salt is typically thought of as one of those “coastal colors” that is so very popular now. The name even depicts it, “Sea” Salt, and as it should since it’s pretty darn close to that super amazing soft green that you see skimming the top of the ocean when the light hits it just right. This is the color that we all want in our home because it reminds of us that little piece of amazingness when we were on the beach. It’s a good memory and it makes us happy so let’s capture that feeling in our home with color.
Sea Salt can also be found in other elements of nature as shown in the photograph I have above. The picture is actually not very pleasant. If I told you what it was you’d be grossed out so I’ll just leave it up to your imagination, after all, beauty is in the eye of the beholder right? I added some bling to make it just a little more beautiful and to add interest – I don’t know – just trying to get creative I guess.
Anyway, if you look closely at the photograph you’ll see that the patina on the screw is very similar to Sea Salt.
So you “sea” Sea Salt doesn’t have to be just known as a Coastal Color. It’s all about how you view life and all the colors that are available to us. Feel free to try other hues to coordinate with it.
Now that I told you all about the wonderfulness of Sea Salt, I’d like to talk about the downside a bit.
As I stated in the very first paragraph, a trillion other people have Sea Salt in their homes. Why on earth would you want to be herded into having the same color as everyone else does? Sea Salt is great but trust me when I tell you that there are at least a trillion other colors just as nice if not better. Let me share a conversation I had with a client this past Saturday.
Me: “What color are you thinking about for your bedroom?”
Client: “Oh I don’t know, maybe Sea Salt. My friend has it in her home and it looks really pretty.” (client is a young, single woman)
Me: “Of course she does, so does a trillion other people.”
Client with open mouth: “What?”
Me: Sea Salt is a very beautiful but very popular color. Wouldn’t you love to have a color palette in your home that is just yours?”
Client: “Well, sure!”
Me: “Great! Let me show you some other options that will be just as pretty and a color that I’m sure most people will not have in their bedroom.”
Client: “Ok! What color would that be?”
Me: “How about a soft buttery yellow?”
Client: (quite but thinking about it) “Ok!”
Me: “Great. Let me show you some super pretty colors that will be perfect for your bedroom.”
Sold. Done. Complete. Success. I can’t tell you the color I chose for her but I can tell you that is was buttery beautiful.
I see it this way, if you are going to hire a Color Expert to choose color for your home, why on earth would you want me to choose a color that everyone else has??????????????
… back to Sea Salt.
Not don’t get in a huff. If you already have Sea Salt in your home, just make it your own. Use it in a different way and NOT as a Coastal Color as most people typically would. I know that is difficult to do but try to train your eye and your mind to think outside the box when it comes to color and the combinations you can use.
For example, I have Sea Salt paired up with Exclusive Plum, the color of the year by Sherwin-Williams. Now, how about that? Pretty cool right and not very coastal. THIS, my friends, is how you can make some old new again, plus it looks amazing if you ask me.

Great post! I don’t have sea salt (it’s not popular here in Finland…or should we say not yet popular :). but I do have a bit of sea foam on one piece of furniture and I have really loved it even if it has been a little out if my comfort zone.

I’d like it for a bathroom. Not too dark, not too bright.
Oh it’s a perfect color for the bathroom and that where I see it most of the time. It’s great for the people who want that spa feel. Pretty color. What color is your bathroom? Believe it or not, mine is earth tones with one big brown accent wall by the tub. Guess I’m setting my self up for the log cabin I want some day.
I think Sea Salt is a perfect neutral color that lets you change out the accent color with ease,each year or season when you want something new & fresh

I recently painted a spare bedroom in Sea Salt. I love it! I am trying to select bedding to accent the color of the walls. The room is not very large and can only accommodate a twin size bed.(Not a lot of options in twin size bedding) Flooring is a oak color laminate. Any suggestions for bedding and a color to make walls pop. Thanks!

“Coastal” isn’t really my style, but I do like the idea of using Sea Salt for our master bedroom. I would like to do a dark accent wall, and was thinking a charcoal gray shade perhaps? Do you have any recommendations for heading that direction?

Hi Donna, I have a southwest adobe house and my bathroom is woollied all kinds of colors so I would like to paint it something completely different and I ran across sea salt. All the trim (wood around window, door and closet louvered door) is painted Dunn Edwards Myth 663 which is a true purple, not grayed. I’m hoping to avoid repainting trim because it’s a pain and I don’t think stark white and sea salt looks very southwest. Anyway, I would love your opinion of sea salt and purple and also what is new with color in southwest decor? Thank you very much!!
Hi Gayla, I would need to see your home in order to give you a proper response. The fact that your home is “woollied in all kinds of colors” may be a challenge. When my clients have a very colorful house, I usually neutralize the walls. i have newly painted seasalt walls in kitchen, with extrawhite woodwork. The floor is old white linoleum tiles with tiny, faded pink and green flowers. The cabinets are old yellowing white ikea. I am replacing miniblinds with miniblinds. I am being strongly encouraged to choose mushroom or taupe blinds. But i want blinds that are the color “forest shadow” (by Bali). It’s hard to imagine how forest shadow will look next to seasalt.
I’d be careful of “mushroom” anything with SeaSalt. Mushroom can either had a yellow or pink undertone. If it’s pink, it’ll look really bad with SeaSalt. I’m available for Virtual Color consultations if you want my help. My contact information is on this blog.
I have Sea Salt on the family room walls and have purchased a very light colored textured gray sofa and 2 recliners, one is a dark charcoal leather gray and the other is a medium gray colored Flexsteel power recliner. Room is 19′ x 13′ with a centered wood burning fireplace. What color carpeting would be best and what accent color would really work well? HELP, I need to order carpet ASAP. Thank you.
Just make sure your carpet is not the dreaded pinky-biege. Take a pillow from your sofa so you can coordinate your carpeting. As far as accent colors? Try something different like chocolate brown. That’s going to be my go to neutral for 2017.
I enjoyed your article on Sea Salt. It is one of the 4 colors I am trying to decide on. The other 3 are Comfort Grey, Rainwashed, and Contented. What are your other suggestions for color and what are good colors to use in an adjacent room. All the rooms,living room,kitchen and dining rooms are connected.
Those are all popular choices from Sherwin Williams but your answer involves a color consultation. Color depends on many factors such as your location, decor, flooring, granite etc. I’d be happy to quote you if you’re interested.
I have clear maple cabinets with a dark karadon green countertop, and a lot of wood …windows and casings are pine,oak floor and basboards. Can you give me some ideas as to what color to paint the walls.

I love your suggestion of pairing Sea Salt with a spicy orange accent! My fiance and I just bought our first home and the sellers painted almost the entire place Sea Salt. Coastal chic is definitely not our thing but we are going to try to make it work for our bold, contemporary style. For those hot accent colors, what undertones do you think bring out the best in Sea Salt? Like you said, just because everyone uses Sea Salt doesn’t mean we can’t spice things up and make it our own!
Love it Jae!!! Go for a darker, earthy green. It’s shades darker than Sea Salt and is the perfect complement next to spicy orange. I have it in my house and have to say, it looks pretty darn good! Know what else I like about it? It’s not the typical blue and gray that you see in everyone else’s home. Go for it!!!!

Sure! If you totally love it then use it. Sea Salt is already an ocean color. The plum, can be your accent color that coordinates with it all.

I have painted my dining room sea salt. I have one wall that has a bumpout wall mount fireplace with wide black trim.
Looking for an accent color vs spending the money to tile it. My floors are porcelin wood gray/brown. Adjoining rooms are accessible beige.

If you do choose white, go with a warmer white. Some of the cooler whites have a blue undertone.Anesthetic white may work – it has a warm gray undertone which may work with your browns.
I have a dilemma. I have a northfacing bedroom, vaulted ceiling(in white) with heavy white crown molding . Currently the walls are deep green but wanted to do seasalt possibly in the bedroom or adjoining master Bathroom. The is in SW latte and heavy crown in white. Can this color be used with Latte being so visible with the door open? Would it make more sense to do the bedroom in a deeper shade or a variant of Latte and keep bathroom seasalt? I wold be mixing cools with warms I think!
Latte is a fairly dark color and not a really good choice for a North facing room. I would think you’d want something a little more lively to brighten up that space. It’s also tough to mix warm and cools together.

Latte is in the Foyer area. Sorry I wasn’t clear. The bedroom door opens into the foyer so it is visible. I really like some of the blues like SW lanquid or Quietude but if i id the bedroom in blue it seems my only choice for a bathroom would be Kilim beige or something light like that. Really want a blue that works in a north facing bedroom that is medium deep in strength.
This is why I don’t answer these type of questions on my blog – details are very important and there just isn’t room here for pictures of course, and the details that I need to best answer your color questions.
Like I said earlier, I’m not not a fan of Latte, especially in the foyer – it’s way to dark and the color is too dominant to blend in with all the other colors in the surrounding rooms.

Sherwin Williams has some really nice colors (about 200 new ones) that can really spruce up your home. Email me to discuss.
I just painted a guest room Sea Salt and would love to use Exclusive Plum as an accent. How would you pull it together; eg, bedding draperies, etc. The trim and shades are white.
It may be hard to find bedding and decor in Exclusive Plum, it’s not a trending color now unless you have custom drapery then you probably can find a color close to it.
I have a 1954 1500 sq ft mid century modern home in Denver. The walls are currently painted beige with yellow undertones (which I don’t like) and an accent wall of soft green wasabi like color in each room. I have used orange and turquoise accents through out. The floors are (worn) red oak. Ceilings tongue and groove painted white with beams painted dark brown. Espresso IKEA kitchen cabinets. I just changed the backsplash to turquoise glass (Hirsch silhouette smash box). We have a turquoise couch and orange upholstered wood frame chair, an Eames black lounge chair and an Eames orange fiberglass rocker. Just bought a grey rug with some soft orange and turquoise circles. I like Sea Salt or Rainwashed for a new paint color. My dilemma is what color to paint the accent wall. I kind of like having an accent wall.
Oh Barb is sounds like you already have a lot of color going on in your home. When I have clients with very colorful decor I usually suggest a super neutral wall color either in the gray family or something creamy. Also, not all homes need or should have accent walls. I’d really have to see pictures of your home to better direct you.
I have Sea Salt in my Master Bath (faces east) and Master Bedroom (faces north). They look like totally different colors! The bathroom is greenish grey like you see online and in the color chip. The bedroom is blue. Very bluish green. Sigh, I was hoping for the look just like the bathroom.

Ahhh you mentioned orange accent. I found your blog googling Sea Salt to see if it was visible with floors like mine. BURNT ORANGE Italian porcelain wood grain-ish tile. LOL.

Honestly Linda – Kilim Beige is becoming the laughing stock of color. It is so overused and quiet frankly – not that great of a color. There are many other colors that will go with Sea Salt and Indigo Blue. Try Natural Tan 7567 or Worldly Gray 7043. I’ve used those combos before for my clients and it really looks great. Kilim Beige is just too yellowish, too beige. Go for a “cleaner” less yellow neutral. Hope that helps!
I have sea salt in my Laundry Room and love it! I love the bright airy feel and hint of color. I’m working on my nursery now and was wondering if there was a similar color but with a blue undertone instead of green.
Sherwin Williams has a bunch of new colors, they start with “9” in the new fan deck. There’s a blue called Lullaby SW 9136 that I just love! It’s perfect for a nursery, a super nice blue. Try that one … and congrats on the little one!

I just thought the Plum was a sexy, romantic color to use with Sea Salt. I liked the contrast and it was just a different look. Using gray would be too close to Sea Salt – and very typical.
We are renovating the master bath, and we chose Sea Salt for the walls. Our floor will be grayish wood plank look tile, with the shower floor in a dark black and graphite pebble mix, and classic white subway tiles for the walks, but with medium gray grout. I’m struggling to find towels that I like. Any ideas for accent colors? I really DO love coastal design, so I’m m okay with classic coastal decor. Our vanities are bright white, so trim will be bright white, too…
Right off the bat, a charcoal gray comes to mind. You don’t want a light towel because they are a pain to keep clean. I’d suggest going to the store and picking up a dozen hand towels in the colors you think will work. See how they look in your room – keep the one or two (yes you can combine two towel colors in the bathroom) and return the rest. Don’t forget to keep the receipt. Let me know which one you decided on 🙂

I have been looking at sea salt by SW and Gray Cashmere by BM. However, I think the lighting within the one room is throwing it off. All of the colors read bluer in our dining area than they do in the work area of the kitchen. I love the look of the colors in the work area-but then they are blue in the other room. Can you think of a similar color that is a little greener, so maybe the blue won’t show so much? Also, I have a grey-green island. (I guess, the color is so hard to nail down….) Everyone keeps saying to stay away from blue with that color. Is that true?
That’s the odd thing about Sea Salt. In one room it’ll look bluer and one room it’ll look greener and one room it will be more gray. It’s like getting three colors in one! Adjust your light bulbs until you get the look you want.

Color to me and loved Sea Salt SW6204. My daughter who is an Interior Designer suggested Blush. I don’t want that color. I am having a beige carpet installed. Any suggestions?
Blush? That could be a problem. It depends on your beige carpet. If it’s yellow beige, Blush (pink undertone) and the yellow of the beige carpet will look yukky together.
Get a sample of the carpet in your home and sample out the color you like to be sure. It also depends on your lighting and where you live.

My bedroom is west facing and painted SW Silvermist. I am thinking of painting master bath SW Sea Salt. Only one small north facing window but three is very little natural light. Appreciate your thoughts on complimentary color to Silvermist. Thanks.
Be careful when you’re choosing colors for West facing rooms. The warm tones of the sunset will really change up your colors but that can’t be helped. Colors change throughout the day.
Also, Silvermist and Sea Salt look very similar. Plus with your lighting, they may even look like the same color in your rooms.
I’d try using colors that are a little more saturated. I refer to these two colors as “chameleon colors” because they change so much. One day they’ll look blue, then gray, then green and it’s just really confusing to figure out what the real color is.
I’d stick to a cleaner, brighter color for you rooms. I hope that helps oh and test these colors out to be sure.
I was about to paint my powder room revere pewter but now I’m thinking I want that in the entry, hallway and split the dining room with another color(chair rail). I have very light tan carpet and white ceramic floors with early American woodwork. Can’t figure out what to do as accent colors, I’m desperate!!
No you’re not, lol. You have lots of options with all that neutral going on.
So if my living room is mostly gray, what’s your opinion on possible colors for the other area’s.
I’d tie in other colors that you have in your home. Maybe the artwork? Granite colors? There’s really so many possibilities from a patina green which I have in my living room to a spicy orange which I also have. I too have a gray sofa.
Donna, The idea of orange intrigues me, as I am painting my kitchen sea salt and I love painting my ceilings a different color. You mentioned Spicy Orange is this the name of a SW color? My floor is terra cotta so the orange would be lovely. let me know when you have a chance and so happy to see this thread.
If your floors are terra cotta that MAY be too much orange in one room. Try SW 6361 Autumnal for an accent somewhere. See how it looks with your flooring. There are so many shades of “terra-cotta” you’d have to see these sided by side. Let me know 🙂
I am thinking of painting my living room and kitchen sea salt color. I need a recommendation for ceiling white and also an off-white base color for the rest of the house. Base color should have enough differentiation with ceiling and should go well with sea salt. Idea is to brighten the space since there is not much natural light except in 1-2 rooms. Do you have any recommendations? Thanks!
Try Alabaster SW 7008. The Ultra Whites and standard Ceiling Whites are too cool and can sometimes appear as a light blue. Hope that helps.

Well lucky for you because you can have the freedom to choose just about any accent color in the bathroom. If you were looking for an accent color in a let’s say the LR, you’d have to pull a color that would tie in with that room.
So the bathroom accent can be fun. Try Carley’s Rose SW 9002

Help! I am at a loss for what to do. My new home is painted a light sandy beige (builder painted the entire home (walls and ceilings this color). Its a very large open floor plan with the kitchen blending into the informal dining blending into the living room with partial archways and no true separation of rooms…AND these rooms face North and stay relatively dark. I love sea salt and have planned to paint all three rooms this color. The color looks keeps changing… from near white looking to green grey. And then sometimes a pale blue. But the real problem is the ceilings. I painted them Behr ceiling Ultra bright white and now they look blue and or grey. I’m so frustrated and exhausted from painting ceilings. I wanted a true white to really brighten up the space and complement the sea salt.
Other- Dark wood cabinets, Dark wood floor, dark brown couch, jute rugs, seagrass end table, and rusty orange accents and side sofa chair.. I have lots of pics. Grateful for any help!
I know what happened to your ceiling Asha. I don’t know where you live but if you’re familiar with snow and how it looks in the winter you’ll know what you did wrong.
When white is so white it looks blue, just like snow. Ever notice how blue the snow looks sometimes? Crazy isn’t it? I actually use Ultra White when I need a light, pale blue on the ceiling for that very reason.
I’d start with a clean white on your ceiling. I don’t use Behr paints but if you use BM or SW you’ll find they have great whites. Now the ceiling color you choose will depend on the rest of your decor and wall color. I’m not liking that you have a beige throughout your entire home. I never suggest doing that. I’d much rather see awesome color that defines and separates each room especially if you have an open floor plan.
So plan on covering up that ever changing beige you have. That would be where I’d start then look into a soft white ceiling that will complement your palette. Send me an email if you’d like my help when you’re ready.
Donna, I have stumbled on this thread while researching SWSea Salt. I have already used this paint in a powder room and spare bedroom downstairs and love it so much am thinking about trying upstairs.
I have a brick fireplace that is more in the orange shade then deep red brick. Room is North West facing and gets afternoon sun. Have been going back and forth about paint colors for,this room. I have looked At so many grey shades and a few are nice but I think way to dark. My favorites would be Accessible beige and Modern Grey. My friend feels that I should carry SW Alabaster through the whole house but I tend to be a woman that likes a little more pizazz then the same color in every room.
The suggestion you had for another reader was to pair up Alabaster as a ceiling color Sea Salt. That might be a perfect way to work my living room.
Also love the plum color you suggested.

If I were to do living room walls in Sea Salt, ceiling in Alabaster do you think BM Chantilly Lace would be a nice wood trim color? Or do you have another suggestion?
Yes I have another suggestion. Use Chantilly Lace for both your trim and ceiling color. Your ceiling will look different because Chantilly Lace will be viewed upside down, the light will be hitting it differently than on the trim so although it’s the same color, it will look slightly different. It should be pretty.
We are getting ready to list our house and are wanting to update our paint colors but still stay relatively neutral. I was looking at Sea Salt for our hallway bathroom (interior room, no windows). My question is, would you paint the ceiling Sea Salt also or go with just a white?
YES!!!!! Paint the ceiling Sea Salt! It’ll look pretty and so much easier than cutting in – promise 🙂

Well that depends on a few things. That room would have a very coastal, feminine feel – is that ok? If you want it less feminine then I’d use Rainwashed for more color and contrast. Sounds pretty!
What would be a good match for the ceiling if I use the Sea Salt for the wall of my bedroom?
I would use a warm white like Westhighland White SW 7566. Some of the very white whites will sometimes look like light blue. Sample some out and be sure to hold them upside down to view if you’re using a color chip
Thanks Donna. I like your suggestion of Sea Salt walls and Westhighland White ceiling for our bedrooms. Our house has ocean views in front and pasture/ hills behind. There are two rooms facing the hills, each well lit – a media room and a study – with lighter-colored hardwood floors and teak window frames. Generally we have a lot of wood and glass and want colors that fit well in our sub-tropic island environment. Suggestions?
Tons! Try not to use gray, keep your blues with warm undertones and definitely bring in the colors that you see in the ocean, into your home. Also think about adding lots of texture inside as well – natural wood, rocks, shells, twigs etc.
This is the best site! I had never made a comment about how the wall color made me feel until I saw Sea Salt in a friend’s home. It really does have a calming effect. So, I am painting the living areas, kitchen, halls, and baths in Sea Salt. I have wood trend Birch Oak tile throughout house. My master bedroom is currently Concord Buff, what would be a good color for the bedroom, since I don’t want to do the whole house in one color. I have heavy black with brown furnature in the bedroom . The room has lots of light, facing North and West. I am looking at Buff or maybe Dover White, I want some color that will compliment the floors and the Sea Salt in the other rooms. From what I am reading, colors with a yellow tone may not be the best. I have no color sense when it comes to things like this.
You’re awesome! I try to change it up and make it interesting, glad you enjoy it. The color you pair up with Sea Salt will depend on your decor and the undertone of your flooring. You can bring out either the green, blue or gray in it. No wonder everyone STILL LOVES SEA SALT 🙂
I am thinking of painting the master bedroom sea salt. I want to use gray blue bedding. My furniture is vintage wicker. My head is made from a refurbished door chalk painted and distressed in expression wax. What do you think about the blue bedding and chocolate brown accents.
Belinda, I think that may work. The great thing about Sea Salt is that it’s a perfect blend of gray, green and blue. It will look great with the brown accents and should be ok with the blue bedding. Get the color chip and see before you paint.

We just did our master bath in sea salt. Doing the floors a “seaside oak” and the trim in white. I hate our gross vanity, it’s a fake oak looking color.
I’d love to paint it, but have no idea what I should do….paint it white, make the inner parts of the cabinets a sea salt, or paint it all white, or a charcoal gray…no idea.
Anyone have any suggestions?
Honestly? I wouldn’t paint it at all. It’s really hard to get a professional look if you don’t paint for a living. I’d look into buying a new vanity. Check Lowe’s and Home Depot. They have some really nice ones there with all kinds of sink options. Look into the white or gray. I’m actually doing the same for my upstairs bathroom, buying verses painting it.
