Color Watch: Brown

Why is brown such a great color to have for the home? Because it’s warm and will go with just about any color that you already have in your home right now.

From blue, to green and many colors in between, brown will be a great companion color.

I wouldn’t suggest painting your entire room brown although for the dining room or office, that will be just fine.

It may be too much if you have a large bedroom but just perfect for accent features on one main wall or even the ceiling.

The reason I love brown so much for the home is that it will bring balance into your home. Many people are going for the darker, walnut floors and still have very light walls. That is  just an unsetting look. Your flooring will be the first thing you notice when you walk into your home and it shouldn’t be that way.

If you add brown accents to your home, you now will have balance. You’ll have a dark floor, brown on the wall which takes your eye up and then scattered brown accents though out your room to complete the look. That’s just good design. Have your eye travel in the room, not just stop at the flooring.

This will definitely be the color to watch along with green for 2016-2017.

  1. Some popularity of brown would be great for me — I have dark cabinets and woodwork in the kitchen and would rather not paint them. Go brown!

I just feel the brown will be the new go to neutral. White is too empty, gray is lifeless, black hurts just looking at it but Brown has potential to really bring a great connection in the home. It goes with so many colors and it’s just a great grounding color – if you know a little about the chakras. Thanks again Art!

I agree that brown is underused and overlooked. My husband and I have always been well obsessed with wood, so that brings in a lot of brown, but there’s a little brown in elsewhere in our common area as well: wall decor, branches, art, books. It’s a nice and cozy color, good with the blues and creams.
One of my girlfriends has brown walls in her kitchen. She’s got white cabinets and tons of white trim, and the brown is a rich, almost black color, like coffee beans. It’s very warm and inviting despite the contrast.
Our bedroom sorta has a brown and aqua thing goin on. It wasn’t even intentional, but it works. Maybe the brown is masculine enough for The Mister, I’m not sure. Left to my own devices, my bedroom would be ungodly floral 😉
