Art To Color Palette: An Easy Way To Design Color For Your Home

This is one of my favorite ways to develop a color palette – from art. If you like a particular piece of art, there’s a really good chance it’s because you are drawn to it’s colors.

Here I have an oil painting that I just completed called “Koi Kat.” I LOVE the colors here!

I particularly love the orange and blue together, they of course are complementary and opposite on the color wheel. They just belong together. This is also one of the reasons I choose a blue wall for homes that have a lot of orange tones on their flooring. It just balances all that orange out.

There are still dozens of colors that can be found in this art that we not called out – that chartreuse for one. It too is a great color but would be a challenge to incorporate into the home.

So try something fun. Take one of your art pieces to the local box store and pick 4-5 of your favorite colors from the painting. Match it up to the color chips, bring them home and see how it looks.

  1. I would’ve never thought to pair blue walls with all that orangey flooring but that’s a great idea. Blue and orange are favorites for me to paint with and just for that reason! I love your latest painting Donna!

  2. Thank you Jaimie! Yes – and it’s perfect since so many people still love those coastal blues. Look how blue and orange bounce off each other in the painting. The blue distracts from the orange and adds beauty to it. Thanks so much ❤

So true! I had a beautiful painting by Cheri Blum which had purple and white flowers with green and brown also but I’m not a fan of purple so emphasized green and brown more which was popular a few years ago .I had palm on the walls by SW and brown curtains . However it just felt heavy. I decided to bring out the white and purple and found a beautiful pillow with large purple flower and put on white comforter and white curtains. The room totally changed. That painting was the key and so glad I tried the purple with white. Cheri Blum was so talented- I ‘m sorry her life was so short.

  4. Her flowers are so beautiful – has an Oriental feel. Do you mean Hearts of Palm by SW? I love that green. SW has that and Palm Leaf which is darker.

I bet the white and purple looks amazing and lifting. Good for you for having that color sense 🙂
