Waterscape by Sherwin Williams; Can I Use It on My Cabinets?

Waterscape SW 6470 is a great color but will it work on cabinetry? Yes and no. The surrounding decor will be key to how this works.

Today I’m sharing an email with you from one of my virtual clients. She loves Waterscape but wants to know if she should paint her kitchen cabinets this beautiful watery blue.

Isn’t Waterscape a great color? The question is, does it belong on cabinetry? Here are my thoughts.

Things to consider:

  • is the rest of your room neutral?
  • will Waterscape match the undertones of your decor?
  • what color is your countertop?
  • what is the main color of your flooring?
  • does the rest of your home have a beachy look?
  • will you still love Waterscape five years from now?
  • do you plan on selling your home anytime soon?
  • if so, do you think the next homeowner will like it?

These are just some of the elements to consider when using a specific color for your kitchen cabinetry. I remember I had a client a few years back who painted her kitchen cabinets turquoise blue. Remember the Tiffany Blue trend when EVERYONE had to have that color in their home? I had a heck of a time designing a color palette around turquoise blue kitchen cabinets. She loved turquoise SO much she wanted it all over her house, on the wall too. The problem with that is once you put turquoise on the walls and cabinets unless you have white or cream decor in your home, it will not match the rest of your home. My client had very traditional furniture with earthy greens, gold, and burgundy so needless to say, nothing matched. So to tie in the “dated” furniture colors, I had to use neutrals and man was she mad!

So where can you put Waterscape? If you have a home that is very, very neutral you can pull off this beautiful color on your kitchen cabinets. With a white or cream granite, light gray flooring and any of the colors I have in the graphic about to tie in other decors would be perfect. Other than that, keep those cabs classic and neutral.

I like it for a wall If matching up against the light gray.

Yes Waterscape would be a nice choice for a cottage or beachy look for the home. A neutral wall would be good, light gray is ok but keep the undertones the same so they don’t clash.
