What Color Should I Paint My Deck?

Paint? Yes paint, not stain. Everyone has a preference but I love the look of painted decks. The solid colors give complete coverage and I love the way it looks – so clean and neat.

I recently did a Virtual Design for a client and want to share a really awesome color with you.

If you love the outdoors like I do, this Blue Spruce will just extend right into the backyard. You can brighten it up with colorful flowers and decor of course.

This deck paint is a solid paint color – not a stain. You will not be able to see any of the wood grain through this paint so make sure that is the look you want.

What are the benefits of going with a paint instead of a stain? It lasts longer. A painted deck will last up to 8 years where as a stained deck will roughly last for 2-5 years depending on what level of stain you use.

You can also try a gray to coordinate with your walk way and stay more neutral. If you live in a super hot climate the lighter color will retain less heat so keep that into consideration as well. Shady area? Go with the green.

So what color will you paint your deck? If you need help with this process, I’d love to help!

My house has 1980’s light blue siding. We did the deck in Eggplant. It was the perfect color. Not too-too purple, deep color, some grey in it as well as blue. The railings are white. Liked it enough to do it again when it was time for maintenance.
I think it may have been Olympia paint from Lowes’

That’s a great choice but not all people share your adventerous color choices. I have a light gray home and also chose an eggplant color for my front door. Eggplant goes really well with light blues and gray … and garlic bread 😉

I made the mistake of re blogging on my site, with full disclosure of the owner. That will never happen again.

Thank you. I get so upset because so many people do this and most of the time it can’t be fixed or I’m just ignored. It’s on your facebook group too. I appreciate your help.

I would like to re blog, posts so my clients could see what you do. I like to recommend people that I think have talent. But if this is an issue I won’t

I’m not a fan of reblogging because the entire article goes on your page – and it’s not your content. Blog posts are more professional when you actually right the article yourself and link it to other posts that are of interest to you. I’d be ok with linking but not reblogging please. Thank you Sondra.

Hi Donna I have a question, I am desperate, you read so many different things about painting verses staining, well we are selling our house started painting it with solid color paint stain cedar, I don’t really like it was wondering, should I have just got a transparent stain. I am so confused should I have just left it bear, I don’t know what the buyers will want, Please Help!

    • Donna Frasca says:

If you are selling your home, fix your deck so that it looks it’s best. Is it old? Then use a solid stain to hide all the age and chips that are there. Is your deck brand new? Use a transparent stain so you can see the wood grain – if you have a high quality wood. There is so much to consider here. I myself, love the solid stains because they come in great colors, are easy to keep clean and I know that my deck will be protected for about 8 years. If you use a transparent stain, you’ll be doing that all over again in just a few years. It really boils down to preference and it’s really hard to know what the buyers will want. But I can tell you that whatever you do, they’ll love that it looks great and that they won’t have to work on the deck when they move it. I hope that helps 🙂
