Have bad wall color?
That will throw off your home’s decor in a heartbeat!
You may be a DIYer and decided to spruce up your home yourself, which is fine. You love color so you bought colorful decor from Pier One, beautiful bedding from Pottery Barn went to Pinterest to see what the latest and greatest wall color was and you even had your furniture re-upholstered with the most beautiful fabric from Sunbrella. You felt like a Decor Goddess because you bought the most awesome trendy things! You were excited! Then, trouble hit.
Your house looked beautiful in your mind after all, how could it look bad when you bought the best of the best?
Well, one minor detail may have slipped through the cracks and that’s your wall color. The color of your walls is like the foundation in the home. It will dictate which decor direction you should go. Now a lot of Designers will disagree with me and say you should buy your “stuff” first then find a paint color to coordinate but I disagree 110%.
The problem here is that you went out and bought all the things you love – separately, in all the colors you love. Which is fine BUT now your home looks like a bowl of Skiddles at this point with color everywhere!
See the graphic I have here? Looks pretty right? Well that’s because I had a wall color in mind BEFORE I started looking for fabric.Wall color should always come first since that take ups the majority of your homes space then you pick decor to match. This is the way I’ve been doing it for over 30 years (yes I’ve been designing since I was in my 20’s) and it works perfectly!
Many people may have chosen a very neutral wall color or a boring beige which will just about match everything but don’t you want your wall color to be awesome? Of course you do! Have your space look crazy gorgeous instead of just meh. How do you do this? With the right wall color first. The rest will follow.
Have a plan in mind when you decorate your home and like I say here, start with an awesome wall color like Silvermist and everything else will look so much better. Trust me.
So……what do you do about wall color if you just bought a lot of custom drapes that match the existing wall color, but you want to change up the wall color? I love our new curtains, but suddenly I feel like the room colors all look the same. Of course, the biggest problem is that my wife loves everything as is, and I’m the one with the issue……
I would choose a color that is in the drapery, but not an obvious color. I call them “secondary” colors and they are colors that are there but you just don’t notice them at first.
The other thing I might try is to suggest a complementary color so the drapery stands out. In both cases Dr Payet, the decor in the room and also the surrounding areas have to be considered.
Maybe once your wife sees other possibilities she may change her mind. I have persuaded many clients who had a certain look in mind but loved my suggestions. There are so many colors to choose from, I’m sure there will be others that she loves just as much.
Give me a call, I’d love to help!
