How To Thrive In The Interior Design Field

I received an email and wanted to share it with you. She is an Interior Designer but is looking for guidance or training since she’s been out of the loop for a while. Where does she start?

Hi Donna, I love your page! I would love to extend my training in the color world. Any suggestions where I might find reputable training? I have a degree in Interior Design that I haven’t used in years, but it’s a passion of mine. Now that my children are grown I have more flexibility to do design work again. I would love to regain my design knowledge. Design services in the 80’s in my area were unheard of, however, it’s becoming more accepted and utilized. I would value any insight you could provide to me. Thank you very much.

Me: … the best training in my opinion is actual experience. Yes the degree is good but it so does not teach what the clients actually want and need, it teaches the nuts and bolts of basic Interior Design. For me, picking a niche was KEY to my success. Interior Designers are a dime a dozen and you’ll find that they are mostly women who have a little extra cash on the side and who like to decorate in their spare time – more so like a hobby. I’m with you, I’m an 80’s gal to. In 2007 I wanted to start to work smarter not harder. I asked ‘how can I work from home, still do Interior Design and still be home for my family and kids? Virtual work is it. Gone are the days designers go house to house to design and unless you have a store, you’re out of luck. Find your strengths, mine is color, and build from there. Get a new computer and blog away everyday until you’re found on the search engines. I hope this helps, good luck and your question is great!
